Family Medicine with Obstetrics
Dr. Mellgren’s approach to caring for patients originates in part from being raised with the philosophy that even though things can be good the way they are, there are always a dozen ways to view a situation differently and often do things even better. He appreciated the example set by his mother, a nurse, and his father and grandparents, who prioritized and taught the importance of touching others’ lives by helping out in times of need. He decided to make that his career and believes in the role of doctor as a teacher as well as a healer, an approach he likes to take with patients to find and consider the best means to taking care of and improving their health.
Growing up on a dairy farm in the rural community of Long Prairie gave Dr. Mellgren a gift of deep seeded appreciation for the lifestyle and values found in a rural community – a strong influence in his decision to relocate to the Glenwood area in 2008.
Dr. Mellgren obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College, and a Master of Science degree followed by his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota. In 2007, he completed his residency training at the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program in Duluth MN. He pursued further training during and after residency in obstetrics and C-section, endoscopy and other surgical procedures. He has special interest in dermatology, pediatric and adolescent care and medical procedures. As a family medicine physician, Dr. Mellgren provides complete care for patients at all stages of life from newborns to seniors – beginning with pregnancy an delivery.
He especially enjoys time with his wife and children, and getting back to his roots by helping his parents on the dairy farm whenever he has a chance – “tractor time” and improvement projects are his favorite besides the animals. Perhaps a hobby farm is the future, but in the meantime he hopes to take advantage of Lake Minnewaska and do some sailing, kayaking and fishing with his kids.
